Carrum
Surf Life Saving Club was founded in the late 1930s and soon a clubhouse
was built next to the Patterson
River on the popular
Carrum foreshore.
Over the
years boating became more frequent and the River became a popular mooring.
The Club decided the increased boat traffic was a risk to swimmers and
rebuilt the clubhouse 400 metres south, opposite the Carrum Rail Station.
This decision was very prudent, as Patterson River
is now one of the busiest recreational boating lanes in the Southern
Hemisphere. The old clubhouse is now occupied by the Patterson River Motor
Yacht Squadron.
Over
the past 60 years, many lives have been saved by Carrum's lifesavers. This
includes a dog who was resuscitated by his owner,
who knew what to do because he had seen the lifesavers demonstrating
resuscitation techniques on the beach.
Many members have come and gone, as has techniques and equipment. None
with greater impact than the introduction of the inflatable rescue boat,
which made the belt and reel redundant.
The Club is available to be called out by Surf Rescue Command or the
Water Police at other times throughout the year.
We teach surf lifesaving, first aid and resuscitation to members, local
schools and the community. Surf awareness and water safety demonstrations
form an important part of our service, as part of our motto, 'surveillance
and prevention'.
T he
Club is a full member of both the Surf Life Saving Association and Royal
Life Saving Society. This allows our members to compete at a large number
of lifesaving carnivals around Melbourne's
Port Phillip Bay and Victoria's
spectacular surf coast. Each year a number of members travel to compete at
the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, the biggest single sport
event in the world.
And we're looking after our future, already training the lifesavers of
tomorrow. Our junior members, affectionately know as 'nippers', compete at
carnivals around the state, from as young as Six!
The Club is looking at a prosperous future, with growing membership and
increasing opportunities. Keep your eye on Latest News for information on
developments and events occurring during the year?
